Looking to learn SEO techniques but not sure where to start? This blog will unpack the basics of SEO so that you can start optimising your website’s content and boost your search engine rankings with ease.
What Is SEO?
SEO – short for search engine optimisation – is the process of enhancing a website’s content in order to boost its visibility, organic (non-paid) traffic and ranking on search engine results pages. SEO aims to help search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo understand your content and thus help users find your site and continue to come back.
But how do search engines discover your web page? This is where indexing comes in!
What Is Indexing?
Indexing is the process by which search engines organise and store information about websites and their pages. This information is then stored in each search engine’s large database known as their index.
is what search engines use to rank web pages and display them in search engine results pages or SERPs. Every SERP is unique—two people can type the same phrase into Google and receive different results based on variables like their location, browsing history and settings. Ranking poorly on SERPs means less clicks, less traffic and less revenue for your website. This is why indexing is a crucial step in the SEO process— without it, your page will not appear in the search results at all.
To get Google to index your content, you can use the URL Inspection tool in to request crawls on specific URLs. Google crawlers can then process your website’s information and analyse it based on a number of factors including the quality of the content, keywords and meta tags.
What Are Meta Tags?
Meta tags are HTML tags that provide information about a web page’s content to search engines. They are located in the header of the page. Meta tags do not appear on the page itself; instead, they can be found in the page’s source code.
The most common meta tags are the meta title and meta description.
The ideal length for a meta title is around 50-60 characters and your meta description should be a brief (150 characters max) and engaging summary of your page. Both of these meta tags should touch one the keyword(s) for which you hope to rank. This will help search engines to understand your webpage’s content and rank it accordingly.

If your website’s content is already of a high quality, then by including keywords, meta tags and indexing your web pages, your site should begin to climb the ranks on search engine results pages. This in turn will help to improve your site’s visibility, attract more organic traffic and help you achieve your business goals!
